in the subject line and I will get back to you as soon as possible
Hopewaves is a free local surf forecast for Rhode Island. It is created by Matthew Iannucci, an Ocean/Software Engineer from Narragansett, Rhode Island. It is used extensibly by locals to check the surf on the buoys and cameras, as well as see the forecast for the upcoming week.
The goal of the app is to give surf forecast information in intuitive ways without taking away the technical details. We are always looking to add new visualizations and features. If you have ideas for things you would like to see on the site or the app, please contact us!
Also, because it will always be free and will never show ads.
HopeWaves uses a custom forecast algorithm to translate wave forecast information from NOAA WaveWatch III into easy to digest reliable surf forecast information. It is more accurate than the rest because it has been tested and tweaked over the last 6 years by real Rhode Island surfers (myself included!). We always welcome feedback so if you want to comment on forecast quality please do not hesitate to reach out!
The other reason, of course, is that this site will always be free!!
This service has been around since 2013, when I started with a small app to display the Warm Winds webcam from Android Devices. Given the goal of the app, it was named HackWinds, as it hacked a conveinent way to view the Warm Winds surf camera on the go.
Since then, the app has expanded from a simple camera viewer to a full blown surf forecasting service. While the cameras are still offered as a feature of the app and site, the surf forecast and buoy data have become the distinguishing features of the application. Given this change, it was time for a new name.
HopeWaves was born by combining the Rhode Island state motto, Hope with the thing that surfers are always hoping for, waves. It is a great play on words and we love the new brand.
